After spending the last few months working very hard at the practice, I slowly descended into my chilled state as Christmas approached. Eventually, I managed to relax and use those holidays to take a moment and reflect on the world that surrounds us. I thought about the pandemic and about how many of our political leaders have failed us so miserably. I tried to remain positive, and I started to think about people who have broken their backs to help humankind. Then, I realised that most of them were women.

In a private forum, I asked for examples of women who will be remembered as changing History in 2020; women who, even if controversial, have yielded the power to change the course of our lives. This is what the forum and I came up with:

Deborah James ‘Bowel Babe’

A campaigner for cancer treatments, Deborah inspires cancer patients and their families.

During a recent TV interview, she discussed her own treatment and how she has put herself in the hands of science to help beat bowel cancer. After explaining how grateful she was for the treatment she has received, she said to the viewers:

‘I call it riding on the wings of science […], and for that, I’m grateful because I’m living when, statistically, I shouldn’t be living’.
